Do you love gin? If so, you know that this "rebellious potion" is now produced worldwide and is one of the top choices for crafting the best cocktails. Some of the most famous include the Gin & Tonic, Martini, Negroni, Hanky Panky, and more. Now, it's time to discover the best gin bars in the world, highly appreciated by gin enthusiasts. We’ve selected six, and some of these establishments have been ranked for years in the prestigious The World's 50 Best Bars list, with three located right here in Italy, making us particularly proud.
1. Sips, Barcellona
Simone Caporale and Marc Álvarez combined their creative minds in 2021 to create Sips, which in just two years has been named both the best bar in the world and in Europe. Sips’ pastel pink and green décor makes it feel very cozy, and as the evening light fades, it transforms into a seductive retreat. Sips embodies the essence of the modern bar, with a central counter showcasing innovative techniques behind their exclusive creations.
2. Double Chicken Please, New York
Double Chicken Please has become New York City's ace card, having claimed the top spot in North America’s 50 Best Bars 2023. Founded by co-owners Chan and Chen, the name "double" refers both to the founders and the dual concepts of the venue. The front room is informal, a luxurious nod to the old diners that once dotted NYC's Lower East Side, with a sleek brass tap system pouring cocktails influenced by Asian culture. The second room, called The Coop, offers a refined lounge with sofas, soft lighting, and wooden furnishings. This year, the bar celebrates its best-ever position on The World’s 50 Best Bars list (No. 2 in the world), earning the title of Best Bar in North America.
3. Locale Firenze, Firenze
Locale Firenze isn’t just a bar; it’s an architectural icon in its city. Located in Palazzo Caccini (also known as Palazzo del Corona), a building dating back to the 1500s with a 13th-century cellar, Locale Firenze offers an unparalleled setting. Centuries-old chandeliers, mirrors, and antique furniture blend with modern details like green walls, suspended balloons, and an impressive bottle rack that dominates the bar area.
4. L'Antiquario, Napoli
Naples is experiencing rapid growth in the cocktail scene, thanks to local entrepreneurs and talented bartenders like Alex Frezza, co-owner of L'Antiquario. This speakeasy-style venue stands out for high-quality Italian hospitality, backed by an award-winning team. Hidden behind a discreet wooden door and furnished with red velvet sofas, the cocktail bar is surrounded by elegant walls adorned with floral wallpaper. The "Napoli Capitale" drink list celebrates the city, its traditions, and the artists who have influenced its vibrant neighborhoods. One example is the "Andy" cocktail, with Calvados and vodka enriched with roasted banana and a splash of champagne, dedicated to Warhol, the pop-art icon. L'Antiquario is also renowned for its interpretations of classics, like the "Negroni Carousel," which includes the Umami with tomatoes and shiitake-infused dry vermouth, the Garden with peach and rose gin, and the Corretto, enriched with Arabica coffee.
5. Zest, Seoul
Naming their bar Zest, a combination of "zero" and "waste," is a bold statement, but co-founders Demie Kim, Noah Kwon, Jisu Park, and Sean Woo are fully realizing this vision. To minimize plastic and can waste, they prepare all mixers in-house. They source honey from urban beekeepers in Seoul, personally collect herbs and edible flowers, and repurpose waste to create garnishes. While savoring their innovative and responsible menu, you can enjoy whole ingredients, from peel to seeds. Sustainability is also reflected in sourcing local products, like herbs and flowers from a nearby farm, and in a unique selection of Korean beers and spirits, including whole-grain soju and makgeolli.
6. 1930, Milano
The term "speakeasy" is widely used in the bar world to describe places with dim lighting and secret entrances, but 1930 in Milan embodies this concept to perfection. With a concealed address, décor reminiscent of American Prohibition, and an exclusive atmosphere, 1930 is a true landmark. Unlike traditional speakeasies with limited drink options, 1930 offers a European menu using some of the most innovative and interesting spirits on the continent. This intimate bar perfectly balances a curated theme with world-class cocktails, but given its popularity and prestige in the industry, there are never guaranteed seats. The best chance of getting in? Befriend the owners, Flavio Angiolillo and Marco Russo.
